Door Handle ReplacementIt's worth replacing door handles if you don't like the way they look or if they're difficult to use. Installing the new handle on your door is easy if you have patience.Modern door handles are equipped with cover plates that hide the screws to create a stylish appearance. If the new handle doesn't already have them connected, you'll have to attach them separately.Remove the handle that was previously usedDoor handles are not only important for their aesthetic value to your home but they're also essential for security as they let you lock and unlock your door. However, over time your door handle can lose its grip, become loose, or appear old and worn out. This is a clear indication that it's time to replace your door handle. One of the first signs that your door handle requires replacing is when it becomes difficult to operate. This is a serious issue since you won't be capable of locking or unlocking the door and put your family and yourself at risk.Another reason to replace the door handle is if it's damaged or broken. A damaged or broken door handle can be quite dangerous, especially when your children or elderly family members struggle to open it, and get trapped within. It's simple to replace a broken handle on a door. Most modern door handles are standard size, so they are suitable for any door. If you're not sure if the new door handle you're buying will fit, try removing the old one and measuring the holes in its housing. This will allow you to purchase the right size door handle. It is the easiest way to remove the door handle by taking it off from the door. This is usually done with the screw driver. However certain door handles come with a cover plate that conceals the mounting screws so you'll need to remove this to access the screws underneath. Once you have removed the old handle, make note of the way the spindle is attached so that you can align it when you fit your new one.You can also remove the door handle by removing the latch mechanism. This is usually done using a screwdriver but you'll need to locate the small latch, which should be at the edge of the trim piece. Once you've removed the latch, you can unscrew the handle from the strike plate and then remove the latch from the door edge.Remove the Strike PlateWhen you replace the handle, you'll need to replace the latch plate, which holds the hole which the door's latch hooks into when it closes. The new handles will come with two latch plates which are a circular and a rectangular plate (see the diagram above which shows the various parts of the door handle). If your current latch plate is rectangular, swap it over to the round one so that the latch hooks onto the strike plate in a manner that makes the handle easier to operate. The first step is to remove the screw that's holding the old latch plate in place. The screws are often quite tight and require a lot of force to loosen them. It may be helpful to have a second person help in this area if it is possible. The latch plate should easily be removed from the door once the screws have been removed. If it is stuck or doesn't move using a nail file to scrape around the edges of the latch plate. This will sometimes free the plate up.Now you can move on to preparing the new door strike plate to be installed. Utilizing the wood screws that came with your new handles, screw the latch plate onto the inside of the doorjamb. Be careful not to tighten too much the screws, as this could damage the strike plate. If you're unsure if the latch plate is in the correct position You can try closing and opening the door to check whether it latches and closes correctly. If it doesn't you'll need to adjust the strike plate upwards or down, or forward or back, until the door closes and latches properly. If the door is moving or jiggling, it may be necessary to expand the hole for latching in the strike plate. This is more frequent for older doors, but can happen due to wear and tear, hinge mortises that are too narrow or not the right size for the latch, or from damaged or broken strike plate. If this is the case then you should use a filing made of metal instead of a chisel, or hammer to adjust the strike plate.Removal of the LatchThe latch is the angled metal piece that is able to move through the hole that runs along the inside edge of your door. The latch moves forward when you turn the handle. It also hooks into an opening in the frame of the door to keep your door shut. If your door shakes when you close it, changing the latch might be all that's needed to correct the issue. The screws that secure the door latch are difficult to see, but you can usually insert a screwdriver into a small hole on the trim plate and pry the latch off. After you've removed your trim plate, it will be simple to remove the latch and the remaining bolts that hold the latch and spindle in place. If the latch isn't able to release it is suggested to use the clip of a paper or tool to free it from the handle mechanism. Insert the item in the slot for the latch that is recessed and then gently twist or jiggle until the handle and latch begin to break off. You may have to repeat this procedure several times before you can pull the latch out. After the old latch has been removed, you should be able to slide the new latch into the slot without problems. Make sure the latch is properly positioned in the slot and lined up with the screw chambers, and then use your new screws to attach it to the strike plate and door frame.Check the backset of the current handle (the distance between the center of the large hole in the front of the door and the edge) before installing the new handle. You should also check that the size of the latch on the new handle matches this measurement. If you're replacing the latch or handle or handle, or if the old lock cylinder is damaged, then you'll need a new one. If you are not changing locks the new lock should fit into your existing recess, and also work with your current keys. Make sure you select the latch with a rectangular cover plate that match your old handles.Take off the cover plateYou can replace your door handles with a new design of roses and levers to enhance the appearance of your house. You can buy complete sets of escutcheons, the escutcheons as well as privacy adaptors and escutcheons. To replace the door handle inside, remove the cover plate (or rose) that protects the screws and the inner mechanism. Utilize a flathead to take off the plate. It may have an opening on one side or be held by a pin.Remove the screw that holds the handle in the interior and put it aside after the cover plate has been removed. Remove the screws that secure both the outer and inner plates. You can loosen them using a Philips Screwdriver. Remove the plates that hold the inner plate and latch from the door. Put them away. Most doors have a gap between the door jamb and the edge of the frame, which allows for a handle, however not all have. If yours doesn't allow for a handle, you'll have to drill a new hole in the door. The procedure to do this is similar to the procedure for opening a door with a lock, but you'll have to be extra careful not to harm the door or frame. After the holes are drilled, you'll need to install new door knob screws. Buy the same size as your old screws to avoid getting a handle that is too loose or tight. You'll also need to install a new strike rod and latch plate that aren't included in most door handle sets.If you're looking for a quality replacement for your interior door handle set look no further than the Amazon's Choice FAERSI two-piece chrome-finished handle set.
