How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed SensorCharles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located near the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.1. Engine Speed SensorThe grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.The sensor is used to connect with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors accordingly.If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of a chain stretch or a jumpy chain link in the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).Testing is a bit tricky as there are two different connector pins and they perform different functions but the most effective way to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is operational, it should be reading around 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this part, check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.2. InjectorsYesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at full speed, i noticed a huge decrease in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, 3 were soaked with gazoline and the fourth one was dry. When i crank the engine with no sparks i put tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline leap out, however the 4th stay closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 i get zero ohm. I assume that the problem is elsewhere.I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car is able to start if the G28 is unplugged and runs fine when it is connected however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value that is -49c even after unplugging it. Also, i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.I'm not sure what to do, i feel i have pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. Fuel PumpThe fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate an extra in a wrecking shop or parts store. Test them out - put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's end). They should be infinite Ohms.4. ECUOur 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that needs to know the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injectors, etc. To do this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you are experiencing issues with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will show the codes that could trigger the engine shutting down.A malfunctioning G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox and a gearbox which shifts faster than normal, and/or a misfire in the gear. It is possible that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you encounter any of these signs. The good news is they are very cheap and easy to find particularly if you're looking at an Bosch sensor, like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this component is also a good option.5. TachometerA malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the cause of numerous issues with your car. It's a crucial component of the transmission of your Audi since it sends information to the ECU on how fast or slow the engine is spinning. This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other components of the car to be affected.The G5 engine sensor is located at the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. You should detect a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms between these two points. This is the same across the Audi 80-100-200-RS2 range, beginning with the 1985 MC and up to the 1997 UrS AN and 1995 RS2 DU You may also find them in wrecking yards.
