How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed SensorCharles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.1. Engine Speed SensorLocated on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU uses this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends a signal to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.The sensor is used to connect with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft in order to activate the spark and injectors.If this sensor fails the ECU will display an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).Testing is a bit tricky since there are two connector pins and they perform different functions however the best method to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is operational, it should be reading approximately 1000 ohms. If you are having problems with this component, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.2. InjectorsYesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, i experienced an abrupt drop in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors are not firing at all. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth one was dry. When I start the engine with no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th stays shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ i get 0ohm. I think the issue is elsewhere.I also tried to reset PID without success. The car is able to start when the G28 is not plugged in and is running fine when it is plugged in, but still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. audi spare keys for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is zero.I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much all other possibilities out. But i am afraid i might have missed something. Please let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!3. Fuel PumpThe fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate the spare in a salvage shop or a parts store. Testing them is easy to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite Ohms.4. ECUOur 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that must know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about fuel injector timing etc. To do this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these sensors go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner which can cause the engine to shut down.A malfunctioning G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox or a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, and/or a misfire while in gear. If you have any of these issues it is most likely that your sensor is failing and should be replaced. They're inexpensive and easy to locate particularly when they're a Bosch model like ours. Alternately, the GM version of this unit is also a great option.5. TachometerA failing engine speed sensor could be a cause for many issues in your vehicle. It's an essential component of the Audi's transmission since it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicle's crankshaft is turning. This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other car components to be affected.The G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear and transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49, via an uncolored wire. The ECU uses this signal to control the amount of fuel and boost, and also timig. audi tt keys relays it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. There should be an average resistance of 1000 ohms in these areas. This is the same across the Audi 80-100-200-RS2 series, starting beginning with the 1985 MC and up to the 1997 UrS AN and 1995 RS2 DU So, you may find some good ones in wrecking yards.
