How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed SensorIn this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU through a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.1. Engine Speed SensorThe sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU uses this information to regulate fuel and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.The sensor is used to connect with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, to trigger the spark and injectors.If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jumped chain link in the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).Testing is a bit challenging as there are two different connector pins, and they have different functions but the most effective way to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when it is at full operation. Look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this component.2. InjectorsYesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a massive drop in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, three were drenched in gazoline, the 4th one was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the three that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one stays shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got zero ohm. audi q7 locked keys in car 'm assuming the issue is somewhere else.I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start if the G28 is disconnected and it runs perfectly when it is connected but it still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.I don't know what to do. I think I've eliminated everything else. However, i'm afraid that I might have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!3. Fuel PumpThe fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them - put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's end). They must be infinite Ohms.4. ECUOur 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, for example. To do this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you have a problem with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will show the codes that could trigger an engine shut down.Some of the signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate gearbox rev counter, gears shifting quicker than normal, and/or a misfire when you're in gear. If you have any of these problems, it is likely your sensor is deteriorating and should be replaced. They're inexpensive and easy to locate especially when they're a Bosch unit like ours. You can also choose the GM version of this unit is also a good option.5. TachometerA failing engine speed sensor could be the cause of a slew of issues in your car. It's a vital component of the Audi's transmission since it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicle's crankshaft is spinning. This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other components in the car to be affected.The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU uses this signal to control the flow of fuel and boost as well as timig. It also relays it to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster. You can check for sensor failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. You can also check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. You should detect an average resistance of 1000 ohms in these areas. This is a standard part across the Audi 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC until the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU, so the best parts could be found in wrecking yards.
