It sends a message to the ECU via a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.1. Engine Speed SensorThe grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft in order to activate the spark and injectors.If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However, the code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).It's a bit tricky to test since there are various pins on the connector and each has its own functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms if the sensor is in full operation. Check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing problems with this part.2. InjectorsYesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced an abrupt drop in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing anymore. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked with gasoline and the 4th was dry. When i crank the engine with no sparks, i place a tissue on top of each injector hole, the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th one stays shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I assume that the problem is somewhere else.I also tried to reset PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem persists at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c, even if I unplug it. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.I don't know what to do. I believe that I've eliminated everything else. I'm afraid i may have missed something. Let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!3. Fuel PumpThe fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find an extra in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is simple to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing up). They should be infinite ohms.4. ECUOur 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that needs to know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injectors, etc. In order to do this it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you are experiencing issues with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will display the codes that could trigger an engine shut down.A damaged G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate gearbox speed counter, a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, or a misfire in gear. If you are experiencing any of these issues, it is likely that your sensor is failing and requires replacement. They're inexpensive and easy to locate particularly in the case of a Bosch sensor like ours. You can also choose the GM version of this unit is also a good option.5. TachometerA failing engine sensor could cause a number of problems within your vehicle. It is an important part of the transmission in your Audi because it relays information to the ECU regarding how fast or slowly the engine of the car is spinning. This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other car components to be affected.The G5 engine sensor is located at the outskirts of the transmission, over the flywheel ring. It transmits signals via gray wire to ECU pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this signal to control fuel and boost, and also timig. It also relays it to the G5 Tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can check for sensor failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can verify continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. You should see the resistance to be around 1000 ohms in these areas. This is a common feature across the Audi 80-100-200-RS2 series, starting from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS AN and 1995 RS2 Du, so you might find them in wrecking yards.
